Take Action Ahead of Severe Weather

As the weather gets warmer and flowers begin blooming, it’s time to prepare for the possibility of spring storms. Louisiana Department of Insurance advises policyholders to act now and get a head start on preparing for the upcoming hurricane season. Review your policies and take steps to protect your home. Here is how you can get started:

Maintain your yard. Trim and remove damaged sections of trees that could break and land on your home. Secure loose items in garage or a shed to prevent flying debris from causing damage.

Consider new mitigation projects. Preventing damage is always cheaper than repairing it. If you're thinking about adding storm shutters to your home, now's the time to speak with a contractor.

Create a home inventory. Make a list of all your possessions, include details like brand names and keep both an electronic and hard copy of the list. It's also a good idea to walk around each room in your house with a video camera or take pictures of your belongings.

Purchase flood insurance. Your homeowners insurance policy will not cover flood damage. Also, keep in mind flood insurance policies will not kick in until 30 days after purchase.

Park Distracted Driving

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness month and a chance to accelerate your efforts to halt this deadly practice.  Distracted driving is anything that takes your attention away from the road. There are steps you can take to make the roadway safer for you and other drivers.

  • Buckle up
  • Maintain the speed limit
  • Map out your route
  • Keep your eyes on the road
  • Ignore text messages on your phone or use audio systems in your car to access them
  • Use safety systems on your car such as cruise control
  • If you have young drivers in your household, talk with them about the importance of avoiding distractions behind the wheel

It is illegal to use a cell phone to text message or post to a social networking site while operating a vehicle on any public road or highway in Louisiana. Click here for details.

Quick Facts: Long-Term Care Insurance

Long-term care insurance is a policy that helps cover the day-to-day costs of care for a person living with an acute or long-term disability. The cost of long-term care usually depends on the amount and type of care you need. Before you purchase a policy, you should assess your needs and examine your budget. If you decide a long-term care policy is right for you, it’s best to shop around for a policy. When reviewing your options, check the solvency of carriers with credit rating agencies, examine complaint statistics at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and do other research online to learn about individual long-term care insurance companies. Once you've found a few companies you're comfortable with, compare benefits, limits on coverage and premium costs.
