Insurance Commissioner Donelon encourages personal life
insurance checkup during Life Insurance Awareness Month

Released: August 30, 2006

Commissioner of Insurance Jim Donelon has joined the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors in encouraging Louisiana residents to take stock of their life insurance needs during this year’s annual “Life Insurance Awareness Month,” September 1-30.

Donelon says industry studies show that not having adequate life insurance can leave surviving family members devastated. More and more families rely on two wage earners, yet the number of adults who have life insurance has been declining for more than two decades. Currently there are nearly 60 million Americans lacking the life insurance coverage needed to help ensure a secure financial future for their loved ones.

“While individuals may think they have adequate life insurance coverage, survivors often find that is not the case,” Donelon says. “Most people know they need some life insurance, they just don’t know how much or what kind.” He encourages people with families to contact their own insurance agent or any life insurance agent for more information on how much and what kind of life insurance they need.

Commissioner Donelon also reminds consumers that the Louisiana Department of Insurance offers a service that allows the public to search for life insurance policies of deceased relatives, if the policy was purchased in Louisiana. You can access the service form at our Web site or obtain a copy by calling our toll-free number. A copy of the official death certificate must be submitted with the form.
